Describe your venture in 8 words or less.

Fresh breakfast sandwiches for the homeless and hungry

What brought you to realize the need for your venture in the world?

I moved to NYC in June of 2014, and was startled by the extent of the homeless crisis. There was one interaction in particular that planted the seed for Hearty Start. I was eating a breakfast sandwich on the walk to work and a young homeless man asked me if I was going to finish my breakfast. He didn't ask me for money. He asked me for the second half of my breakfast sandwich. I'm not sure who was more surprised, him or me, when I handed him the second half of my sandwich. However, one thing was clear--that little interaction made both of our days. I realized that simply sharing breakfast, the most important meal of the day, was a tangible and affordable opportunity to improve the lives of the homeless.

If your venture succeeds in its mission, what would the world look like?

In the short term, we can make the world a little less hungry. Long term, we think our innovative approach to charity can be applied to a multitude of other causes, beyond feeding the homeless.

What brings you to the Pitch for People in search of human capital to support your org.?

We came to Pitch for People because we think their human capital can help exponentially grow Hearty Start and our impact in the community. Oh yeah, and we have a TON of awesome work to get done!

What's the best piece of advice you've gotten this week?

I was talking to an adviser about Hearty Start, explaining all of the reasons why I am confident we will succeed. I went on and on about how efficient our operating plan was, about our low overhead and our marketing plans, and finally she interrupted me and said, "you've told me everything about the business, but I still know nothing about the team. Why are you guys the right guys for the job? Don't forget how important the people are in any new venture."
